The One laptop Per Child, also known as the OLPC or the XOPC was originally, the $100 computer but is now $200. It is intended for people in developing countries to gain access to affordable computers. Last year they were availible for purchase through the company’s site around the holioday season, and this year, it is able to be purchased through Amazon. Both years, you could either buy one and donate it to a developing country which is great if you want to make a donation and think of someone else over the Holiday season, or for $400, you can do what they call: Give One, Get One where you give one to a developing nation and you also get one to keep yourself. The idea is great, I think it is very important to have everyone in the world be able to have access to a computer and the internet. One crucial part of this laptop, is that it has what is called Mesh networking, which allows laptops to serve as a wireless access point to others. This could let people who live in the Middle of the African Congo be connected to the internet. The one issue that I have with the OLPC is that it has the astetic of a child’s toy computer, I would know I had one when I was little. I am describing both the physical design of the machine and the operating system.I think it would be much more effective for use a full operating system and provide them with tutorials because then, if they know how to use Windows, they will be able to use the vast majority of computers in the world.
All-in-all, the OLPC is a step in the right direction for developing countries and I hope that in the future that they will develop a more advanced computer inorder to give those people a better chance of using those skills in a career. It is still a great start and if you want to give technology to people who need it than this is the way!
